KS3 & KS4 Drama
Dance and Drama KS3 Curriculum
Drama has an important role to play in the personal development of our pupils. The skills and qualities developed by pupils in drama, such as teamwork, creativity, leadership and risk-taking are assets in all subjects and all areas of life. Drama stimulates the imagination and allows pupils to explore issues and experiences in a safe and supportive environment. It is vital to create an atmosphere of security, trust and concentration. Drama promotes self-esteem and provides all pupils with a sense of achievement regardless of academic ability.
Dance has been introduced to the curriculum on rotation with Drama on a half termly basis. Dance helps students develop a number of skills:
- Visual appreciation of dance and choreography
- Balanced judgement
- Information gathering and assessment
- Ability to work on your own or as part of a team
It's about social skills, communication skills and having fun - we learn by doing!
KS4 Drama Curriculum
Drama remains one of the most popular GCSE examinations in the country, because it is one of the few subjects which can demonstrate a young person’s ability to work creatively and co-operatively within a group situation, to achieve a common goal. Pupils learn to collaborate with others, think analytically and evaluate effectively. They gain confidence to pursue their own ideas, reflect and refine their efforts.
The department offers two courses for the KS4 GCSE, giving student maximum opportunity to explore and express through the Performing Arts while learning about the industry and technical theatre. These options are chosen based on the students’ abilities and strengths to accommodate a tailored learning style.
- AQA Level 1/2 Technical Award in Performing Arts
Our Level 1/2 Technical Awards in non-EBacc subjects are ideally suited to learners who like to apply their knowledge and understanding to solving real world problems. Many of them are tailored towards specific career areas and all have a focus on creativity. These vocational qualifications fulfil entry requirements for academic and vocational study post-16, and will count as equivalent to one GCSE in the Key Stage 4 performance tables.
- AQA GCSE Drama
Our specification engages and encourages students to become confident performers and designers with the skills they need for a bright and successful future. We've built in as much opportunity as possible for students to do what they like best – participate in performance. all students devise drama and all students explore texts practically and work on two text-based performances. Within this course there is opportunity where students can choose to develop as a performer, set designer and costume designer.
Whichever option the students’ par-take in they can be sure to feel they have tailored learning and gather many invaluable skills, both theatrical and transferable, to expand their horizons.
