Spanish- Key Stage 3

AIMS OF THE CURRICULUM AREA

  • To enable all students to understand and communicate effectively in a foreign language.
  • To offer insights into the culture and civilisation of the countries where the language is spoken.
  • To foster and encourage positive attitudes to language learning and to speakers of foreign languages.
  • To bring the language to life by giving all students an opportunity to experience the culture, folklore and cuisine of the target language in the UK with events such as the Spanish theatre day by native actors and trips to Spanish restaurants. 
  • To give students the opportunity to develop links with and visit countries where the language is spoken through our exchange programme with a Spanish school and the Barcelona trips every other year.  

TEACHING METHODS

  • A variety of teaching and learning styles are used, including whole class teaching, group work, pair work, individual work and use of online resources such as Kerboodle and LingoPie.
  • Students work on the four language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing.

STUDENT ORGANISATION

  • Students are taught in ability groups in Year 7, 8 and 9.

RESOURCES

  • All classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards and visualisers.
  • Students have access to laptops and/or tablets in school to support learning and research.
  • Homework is accessible from Class Charts.

KEY STAGE 3 CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

All students do Spanish in Y7, Y8 and Y9.

Our aim is to ensure that all students:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.
  • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical
  • structures that they have learnt.

AFTER KEY STAGE 3

  • Students can take Spanish at GCSE as long as they have studied the language in KS3 (or are native speakers of a similar romance language).
  • Students have the opportunity to take examinations in Home Languages where available at GCSE and A Level.
